Roger is the Design Resilience Leader for Gensler’s Residential practice and leads the Urban Impact group at Gensler Los Angeles. Since he joined the firm, the group has won a PA Award (Architecture Magazine) and World-Changing Ideas Award (Fast Company) for its Urban Awning transitional housing project in addition to an AIA/CC Award for two riverfront parks in Wuhan, China. Led by Roger, the group’s work has been exhibited at prominent international venues such as the Chicago, Rotterdam, and Venice Architecture Biennales, and includes a wide range of projects including an infrastructure and development plan for northeastern Haiti, several permanent supportive housing projects in L.A. and elsewhere, the redesign of a Malibu camp that perished in the Woolsey Fire, a new downtown campus for UCSD, and a Center for Sustainability in Cameroon for UCLA’s Congo Basin Institute.
Prior to Gensler, Roger was Principal of Roger Sherman Architecture and Urban Design. His award-winning work has been featured in Newsweek, Fast Company, CNN, and The History Channel. From 2006 to 2015 he co-directed cityLAB, an urban design think tank at UCLA. He is an author of several books, including “LA Under the Influence: the Hidden Logic of Urban Property”, “RE American Dream”, and most recently, “Fast Forward Urbanism”. He has taught and lectured widely, including at Harvard, Princeton, Michigan, UC Berkeley, New York's MoMA, and TEDx.
