Trojanische Alterthümer (http://uclid.uc.edu/record=b1659486), a collection of 19th century text and plates from UC's Classics Library recently came to the Preservation Lab for treatment and re-housing. Treatment included humidifying and flattening the several hundred plates and binding the previously loose text portion of the volume. This video shows endbands being sewn to the text block after the gatherings have been guarded, sewn and then rounded and backed. This type of sewn on endband is known as a "conservation endband" because the beads that are formed sit on the spine unlike most decorative sewn on endbands where the beads sit on the top edge of the textblock.
These endbands were sewn with 18/3 Irish linen thread hand-dyed with Golden Phthalo Blue fluid acrylic. The endband is sewn on a rolled strip of alum tawed goat skin.
These endbands and the binding of the text was performed by conservation technician, Jessica Ebert.
